Set your wedding date and the countdown begins! You can plan a wedding in just a few weeks if you’re able to devote enough time to it, but for those of us with day jobs, it’s easier to devote a whole year toward making sure everything is planned just the way you want it. Being organised is the key ingredient to planning a successful wedding.

 

12 Months Before the Big Day
 

  • Determine your budget

  • Hire a wedding planner

  • Make a guest list

  • Decide formality and overall theme

  • Select the venue

  • Select the caterer

11 Months Before the Wedding
 

  • Choose color theme and start thinking of overall design

  • Hire vendors who book up quickly, including your photographer, band, DJ, and videographer

8-10 Months Before the Wedding
 

  • Start shopping for your wedding dress

  • Book hotel-room blocks for guests

  • Take engagement photos

  • Start looking at invitations

6-8 Months Before the Wedding
 

  • Buy your wedding dress

  • Meet with potential florists

  • Book the rehearsal-dinner venue

  • Hire the ceremony musiciansHire the ceremony musicians

  • Order rental items, such as specialty chairs, linens, draping, lounge furniture, white dance floor, etc.

  • Hire a lighting technicial

  • Send save-the-dates

  • Select the bridesmaids' dresses and schedule fittings within the month

4-6 Months Before the Wedding
 

  • Book transportation for guests, if needed

  • Book the bride and groom's transportation (limo, specialty car, etc.)

  • Book the honeymoon

  • Buy or rent the groom’s suit

2-3 Months Before the Wedding
 

  • Have your final tasting with the caterer

  • Choose your cake

  • Buy wedding bands

  • Hair and makeup trial

  • Order the invitations and send

  • Create or plan your menu

  • Brainstorm guest favors and gift bags

  • Book a photo-booth rental

  • Write your speaches

4 Weeks Before the Wedding
 

  • Final dress fitting

  • Buy wedding-party gifts

  • Give the song selections to your band or DJ

  • Give the song selections to your ceremony musicians

  • Assemble gift bags

2 Weeks Before the Wedding

  • Pay your vendors in full

  • Create a seating chart

  • Order or make your escort cards and place cards

  • Have a final venue walk-through

2-3 Days Before the Wedding
 

Take care of things like:

  • Refreshing your hair color

  • Getting your eyebrows done

  • Manicure/pedicure

  • Getting a massage (why not make it a couple's massage?)

  • Final dress fitting (a friend or bridesmaid should come with you so she can learn how to bustle if your dress requires it.)

  • Pack your bags for the honeymoon (don’t forget your passport if you’re leaving the country!), and confirm your travel arrangements

  • Clean your ring (head to your jeweler to get your engagement ring professionally clean so it’s extra sparkly on your wedding day.)

  • Clear your work to-do list so you can only focus on wedding festivities and take it all in!

  • Practice your vows out loud

The Day Before the Wedding
 

  • Drop it all off: Look through everything from the venue checklist and drop it off with the venue coordinator.

  • Get a good night sleep!

The Wedding Day! 
 

  • Treat your friends: Give out your bridal party gifts!

  • Have a go-to man: Give the best man the wedding rings and any cash payments that need to be made on the big day.

  • Put the wedding party to work: Introduce your reception coordinator to your maid of honour or best man so they can work together for any issues.

  • Give a number two: Connect someone in your family or a member of the wedding party with the photographer so there’s a secondary contact point.

  • Enjoy every secont: Time will fly, so don't get stressed with anything at all and if something goes wrong it happens weddings are very unpredictable, just pass it to the Bridesmaides and let them get sorted for you.

After the Wedding
 

  • Return the rentals: Be sure that you have arranged for someone to return any of the rentals that you had for the wedding.

  • Be grateful: Get on those thank-you notes! 

  • Make it official: Collect your marriage certificate.
